Why Your Website Gets Traffic but No Enquiries (and 9 Fixes)

It is one of the most frustrating situations in business. You have invested in a website, people are visiting, the analytics look healthy, but the phone does not ring and the contact form stays empty. The good news is that this problem is common and usually fixable.

The issue is rarely traffic. It is what happens after people arrive. Here are nine causes and what to do about each.

1. Visitors cannot tell what you do

People decide within seconds whether a site is relevant. If your headline is vague, like "Excellence in Solutions," visitors leave. Replace it with a plain statement: what you offer, who it is for and the benefit.

Fix: write your top headline as if explaining to a friend what your business does.

2. The site loads slowly

Slow pages lose visitors, particularly on mobile. Large images, too many plugins and cheap hosting are common causes.

Fix: compress images, remove unused plugins and test your speed with a free tool. Ask your developer to fix anything flagged.

3. It does not work well on phones

If text is tiny, buttons are hard to tap or the layout breaks, mobile users leave.

Fix: view your own site on a phone and try to complete a task such as sending an enquiry.

4. There is no clear next step

Many websites inform but never invite. Visitors read and then wonder what to do.

Fix: put a clear call to action on every key page, such as "Request a Quote," "Book a Call" or "Get a Free Sample."

5. The contact form is too long

Every extra field reduces the number of people who finish it.

Fix: ask only for name, email and a short message. You can ask more questions later.

6. There is no proof

Visitors want to know that others trust you. Without testimonials, case studies, client logos or numbers, your claims feel empty.

Fix: add two or three genuine testimonials, a short case study and any real numbers you can share, such as years in business or projects completed.

7. The content speaks about you, not them

Pages that list your history and awards but never mention the visitor's problem do not connect.

Fix: rewrite key pages to start with the customer's challenge, then show how you solve it.

8. The wrong people are visiting

If your traffic comes from keywords that do not match your offer, visitors leave quickly because they were never potential clients.

Fix: check which search terms bring visitors and focus your SEO and ads on terms that signal buying intent, such as "best [service] company" rather than general information terms.

9. Nobody follows up

Sometimes enquiries do arrive, but replies are slow or missing. A prospect who waits two days usually contacts someone else.

Fix: set up an automatic acknowledgement, assign someone to reply within one working day, and record every enquiry in a CRM or spreadsheet.

A quick self-audit

Open your homepage and ask a friend who does not know your business three questions: What does this company do? Who is it for? What would you do next? If their answers are unclear, you have found your starting point.
